I was informed from my website server that all php5 blogs would no longer be supported and that I needed to upgrade my blog to php7. When the deadline came my bird blog went belly up. I found out that my blog theme, purchased from Cyberchimps, was no longer being supported/upgraded. It was called Eclipse Pro 2 and I really liked it. I was told I could buy Eclipse Pro 3, but when I did my blog looked like a disaster. I found a free theme from WordPress and installed it. It lacks the bells and whistles I had before, but it is the best I can do to try to save years of hard work.
My Keep Santa Cruz Weird blog – www.akabirdnerd.com/blog – still works for some reason. I had a choice of dumping this blog, but I still have 2 years of paid use. I guess I’ll keep plugging along the best I can.
Today, Facebook dealt me a devastating blow. Because it is easier to post a photo on Facebook than in this fancy web blog, I’ve been posting my photos in a group called AKA Bird Nerd. I really haven’t opened it up to people because I’ve used it as a staging area before actually posting in another Facebook group I administer – Birding – Western USA & Canada. We now have well over 1000 members in that group. Well, today I posted a photo into an album on the Facebook AKA Bird Nerd group and it didn’t display correctly. I deleted it. Years of work were deleted when I deleted that one posting. Fortunately, I archive all my photos. It looks like I may be returning to posting current photos here.
The date of March 2014 at the top of the blog is not correct. I posted photos today, but for the life of me I can’t figure out how to change that heading. My blog engine has gone through several updates since I last used it, and I’ve spent more time than I want to admit trying to find out how to edit that heading. I’ll keep trying. (Found it – at the top of the blog is Eclipse Pro Options. Go to the Blog section and edit Call Out Options.)
I’ve decided to add some photo info at the bottom of a photo gallery. Just hover your mouse over a photo and it will give you the common name of a bird with a number in front. Go to the number of the photo on the bottom info post to see information about the photo. Keep in mind that this information was originally posted in a message blog format, so may at times be a little confusing. Sorry about that, but I’m not going to re-write all the descriptions. Copying and pasting the info was tough enough. For instance, if I mention the last post or the next post, it will probably be of the same species so just go up or down by number.
I number my photos like this:
045 – one photo
045m – would mean there are two photos in the set (045 and 045m)
045m4 – would mean there are five photos in the set (045, 045m1, 045m2, 045m3, 045m4)
m stands for more
v045 would mean the photo is in a vertical format (I do this for my own information.)
I usually try to put what I consider to be the best photo as the first number when there is a set, but don’t discount the others in the set. Some viewers prefer the m-photos over the first one.
So, if you can find photo 001 you would see the very first photo I posted. The numbers aren’t that important. The higher the number the more recent the photo and it will help you find information about the photo at the bottom of the gallery.
Once I get all the archived photos on the new blog, I have yet to decide whether I will post the photos in a blog posting and a gallery or just in the gallery with some info data at the end of the gallery. If you have any preferences, drop me an email in the Contact Me section.
The gallery photos look best if the whole line is horizontal format or vertical format. I tried putting the vertical photos at the bottom of a gallery, but it is a real chore. For now I think I’ll just leave it looking a little jagged. Sorry.
My 2013 New Year’s resolution is to give AKA Bird Nerd a new look. I’ve been running the old Theme for 5 years now, so I think it is time for a make-over. I am now retired, so I’m not sure how my emphasis on education will play out. I’ll either incorporate the educational data on the new site or keep it strictly artistic.
One of the major revisions is that the AKA Bird Nerd blog is now accessable at www.akabirdnerd.com and not www.akabirdnerd.com/birds. I will keep the old blog up while I’m working on this one, but new postings can only be viewed at the new location.
I had a major problem – unknowingly caused by me – that wiped out 5 years of work on my bird/nature blog. This is why we do back-ups, but unfortunately my last one was from May 2012. I’ll go back and re-post those photos on the new site.
It will take me some time to get used to the new Theme. I guess that goes for you too. I hope my loyal followers enjoy the new look. Drop me a message any time and share your thoughts.
