Ala Moana Beach Park

Across the street (sort of) from our hotel we usually stay in (Ala Moana Hotel), is a very large park. It is a good place to see many of the birds that hang out around Oahu. Most of them were introduced from other world regions. Many of the introduced birds came from Asia, but this particular bird came from South America.

This is the first set of two I photographed while in Hawaii recently. The Myna (can be spelled Mynah) is from Asia and has been introduced to many places – including Hawaii. It is an invasive bird, much like the European Starling, and not a friend to native species. They are very territorial and can be aggressive. They are, however, excellent talkers when tamed and trained.

1101 Zebra Dove

This is one of the most common birds on Oahu, especially in urban settings where they frequent eating areas to grab crumbs. The Zebra Dove and the House Sparrow, both introduced to Hawaii, are Hawaii’s answer to the dog under the table. I love waking up in the morning to the cooing of these little birds.

I guess Cattle Egrets like grassy areas, because that’s where I usually see them. I’ve never been to the cemetery and not seen a few.

“Get a room!” These two Zebra Doves decided it was time for a little hanky panky. Here is a set of 3 photos of this interesting event. I like the 3rd photo. It appears that the two birds are quite happy. BTW, this species was introduced to Hawaii from southeast Asia and they are everywhere. They are also known as Barred Ground Dove.
