I was very happy to look out onto my back deck this morning to find this juvenile Yellow-bellied Sapsucker bouncing around. I rarely see them around my yard, let alone on my deck! This young one was doing some very comical things and was extremely tame when I approached it to take some photos. The second photo shows it grasping a nail in its bill as if to say, “what on earth is this thing?” The third photo illustrates what I can only think of as, “sunning,” behavior. I took a ton of photos of this bird and was surprised that my camera wasn’t smoking when I was finished! I will post more photos of it tomorrow.

Here are a couple shots of some very common visitors to my back deck. The first photo is of an adult female and the second is of a juvenile. Juvenile Downy’s and Hairy’s have red feathers on the top of their heads as opposed to on the back of the head as with adult males. Take note of the relatively small bill and the dark bars on the outer most tail feathers. This helps distinguish the Downy from the Hairy Woodpecker. Hairy’s have noticeably longer bills and usually clean white outer tail feathers.
