Yellow-bellied Sapsucker – Sphyrapicus varius

Here are the rest of my Yellow-bellied Sapsucker photos (the better ones anyway). This bird was too comfortable around me, pausing to preen while I was only about five feet away. Hopefully it learns to be a little more wary of people.  If you look carefully you can see just a few red feathers starting to come in on the forehead.  As an adult (male or female) this bird will have an entirely bright red crown.

As I was walking out to McAllister Creek, this Northern Harrier surprised me by flying very close. I only got two quick photos – one which came out better than expected.

A few Buffleheads were swimming in the flooded field to the left of the trail as you walk out to McCallister Creek. The previous photo of the Northern Shoveler was on the right side of the trail. Second photo shows male and female.
