Spotted Towhee – Pipilo maculatus

This is one of my favorite backyard birds. You can find a Spotted Towhee in my yard throughout the year. They like to feed on the ground, but if food is sparse they will go up to a feeder. They prefer the globe feeder because they can go inside and feed as if on the ground.

This is a female of this species. It was located quite a distance from me so the photo is not very good.

This was a highlight for the day. This may have been a lifer. I can’t remember, but I certainly can say I don’t see this species much. This bird was along the road that goes along the Nisqually River and the north side of the Two Barns loop trail.

It was so long ago (today being Jan 14 2009) that I don’t remember where in the refuge this was taken. No matter. Thank you Mr. or Mrs. Robin for letting me take your photo.

We were almost back to the car when I got inspired by the grass along the trail. It’s not all about birds you know! A camera and a nice walk on a nature trail really helps you step back and see what’s around
you.
