Though they are endemic to the Pacific Coast of the US, this particular individual is a captive bird at the Point Defiance Zoo and Aquarium in Tacoma.  Great photograph, Malia, of a strikingly beautiful bird!

Dark-eyed Junco’s are everywhere in Western Washington, but I never get tired of seeing them.  It was a nice change to see birds of the, “Oregon,” race while back east I am used to seeing only, “Slate-colored,” birds.  Not a bad result from a point and shoot!

We vacationed recently in Washington at the bird nerd nest and I got to see many species of western birds, including this juvenile Rufous Hummingbird.  It was very entertaining to watch them buzz around the yard and chase other birds.  On one occasion, a juvenile Anna’s Hummingbird flew right up to the bird nerd and I and hovered next to us less than two feet away checking us out.  I did not bring my DSLR on vacation with us, but instead we brought my wife’s advanced ultra zoom point and shoot.  It is not the same, but still does a very respectable job considering what it is.  I’m impressed!

Yikes!  It has been WAY too long since we made a post on the blog, so I thought I’d toss up these two marginal shots of a Merlin I saw recently in Bangor.  There is a pair that has been successfully breeding in the same general area of the city for at least a few years now.  I had struck out every time I checked the location earlier this spring but I was finally rewarded after I learned that there were at least three fledglings.  I found only one, which may be one of the juveniles.  I was watching it fan its tail and stretch its wings before taking flight shortly after these shots.  I love raptors, and this fast and aggressive little falcon is definitely one of my favorites.  This was a real treat for me, though I wish I could have better photos to show for it.  Sorry for the extreme crops and distracting branches, I was really limited.
