White-breasted Nuthatch – Sitta carolinensis

Unfortunately, the rear end of this female White-breasted Nuthatch was behind one of the posts on my deck and I cropped it out of the shot.  I really liked the pose, though, so I decided to post it anyway.

I always love seeing these beautiful birds in my backyard.  The males of the species and definitely brighter and bolder, but I find the females quite striking as well.  This is a species that I will likely no longer see while living in Washington State.  I will instead see its close relative, the Black-headed Grosbeak, which is almost as beautiful!

Here’s a cute little juvenile Chipping Sparrow that visited my backyard feeders recently.  I’m not sure what it has on its bill.  Is that sunflower seed bits?
