There were quite a few of these pretty Red-necked Grebes on the water on what was to be our final boat outing of the season.  The image is a little soft but I liked the colors and reflection.

Pigeon Guillemots are among our most common seabirds along the Pacific coast.  This individual appears to be a juvenile though it looks quite similar to an adult in non-breeding plumage.

This American Robin was posing near the spot where I took photos of the Eurasian Colored-Dove. He decided to ignore me completely and take a quick bath.

Eurasian Collared-Dove – Streptopelia decaocto

We have a favorite drive down by the water that often treats us with Bald Eagles and other raptors. We saw a few of these Eurasian Collared-Doves in two different locations in the Sequim area this day. The first two photos were taken next to the water. The third photo was taken near the Dungeness River Audubon Center – in a neighborhood not far from the bridge.

I know the photo says 2009, but when I was posting this I realized the photo was actually taken in 2010. Therefore, this is my first 2010 photo.

Shawn has been keeping the blog active with his excellent photos while I have been tackling changes in my life – adjusting to a family of 6 instead of just the wife and I, preparing for retirement, taking care of my 89 year old dad, getting setup for school year 2010-2011 (my last!), and just goofing off. Somehow I think I won’t be just sitting around during retirement! Though school is keeping me pretty busy these days, I’ll try to make an effort to process some of the photos I have in my files, and maybe get out birding now and then. Fall is upon us and the waterfowl are beginning to return to Vaughn Bay.

Heermann’s Gull – Larus heermanni

This is one of my favorite of all North American Gulls.  They look so different from most of our other gulls and I guess that’s why I like them so much.  These individuals are in their non-breeding plumage.

Northwestern Crow – Corvus caurinus

My wife, Malia, and I combined to get these two photos of this Northwestern Crow.  While we were parked and eating our lunch at Fort Worden State Park, this guy showed up on a fence nearby, perhaps waiting for a handout.  Northwestern Crow’s are noticeably smaller than their American Crow cousins and generally have a lower pitched voice.  They are only found along the coast from Washington north to Alaska.  We had a great day at Fort Worden with our kids, enjoying the beaches and the Port Townsend Marine Science Center.  Interestingly enough, the movies, “An Officer and a Gentelman,” and, “The Ring,” were both filmed (at least in part) at Fort Worden.
