What Is Nibble University
Students, Parents and Teachers
Welcome to Nibble University. My name is Professor Nibble, and I am the headmaster of NU. That means I’m the Big Cheese around here.
Nibble University is a school just for kids. It is Professor Nibble’s job to provide you with mini lessons that will:
-
help you become a better problem solver
-
challenge and increase your knowledge
-
give you practice using the Internet
IMPORTANT: Please read this carefully. You will not be able to operate Nibble University properly without this information.
For those of you who are not very good readers yet, you may need to have a parent or big brother or sister with you when you visit Nibble University.
Grade 4 The stuff here at Nibble U will have grade level info shown with it so you know which activities you might try. It is really hard to say a question is for a 4th grader and not a 3rd grader. Some of you will be able to do the activities designed for older students. And, if you find a level is too hard, be sure to drop down to an easier level. Professor Nibble is not perfect. He may say an activity is for 5th graders and then many students find the activities too hard or too easy. Be sure to E-mail the Professor and let him know when he makes mistakes!
The Rules Of The Road
Do you see the funny looking schoolhouse reading the purple book at the top of the sidebar? That’s Professor Nibble. Whenever you see a Professor Nibble, you can click on him to go back to the Nibble University home.
How many of you know what a NIBBLE is? That’s right! It’s a little bit of something – sort of like a small bite instead of a big one. When home computers were first being made, some silly guys decided that a piece of information should be called a byte (sounds like bite). Half of a byte is a nibble. That’s how Nibble University got its name. AND…the name Nibble tells you a lot about what Nibble University is all about.
When Professor Nibble was in school he just hated it when his teacher said read the WHOLE chapter of one of his textbooks. He’d rather eat broccoli (well, almost!). One day the Professor got a teacher who was a little different than his others. She asked her students to read one or two pages and then do something to show her the next day. The Professor started having fun doing his homework and made an oath that if he became a teacher he’d do the same thing for his students. So, here at Nibble University, you will find short lessons that won’t take you 100 years to finish!
Nibble University is designed for a browser that is JavaScript enabled. If you cannot use JavaScripts, Nibble University won’t work correctly. NU uses JavaScripts to pick activities for the correct date, manage Knowledge Builders, and for many other activities. If your browser does not work correctly, you need to upgrade to a JavaScript capable browser or go to your browser properties and enable JavaScripts.
More and more I am including activities that are Java applets. Be sure your browser is set to load these applets as well.
IMPORTANT: You must make sure the date and time is set correctly for your world time/date zone. Nibble University chooses activities according to your computer’s settings, not the Nibble University Super Computer.
Please let me know if you are finding any date or other problems while using your favorite browser.
Nibble University activities are divided into two types: Daily Lessons and Lesson Units. The Daily Lessons are short activities chosen by the calendar date. You will be presented with a single question or problem, or a small set of questions or problems. No questions are provided on week-ends.
